Form

In een Type 2 voorwaardelijke zin staat de if-zin in de voltooid verleden tijd en de hoofdzin in de present conditional of de present continuous conditional.

Net als in alle voorwaardelijke zinnen, staat de volgorde van de bijzinnen niet vast. Je moet misschien de zelfstandig naamwoorden opnieuw indelen en leestekens aanpassen als je de volgorde van de bijzinnen verandert, maar de betekenis is hetzelfde.

Voorbeelden

If it rained, you would get wet.
You would get wet if it rained.
If you went to bed earlier you wouldn't be so tired.
You wouldn't be so tired if you went to bed earlier.
If she fell, she would hurt herself.
She would hurt herself if she fell.

Functie

De type 2 voorwaardelijke zin verwijst naar een onwaarschijnlijke of hypothetische toestand en het waarschijnlijke resultaat ervan. Deze zinnen zijn niet gebaseerd op een werkelijke situatie. In type 2 voorwaardelijke zinnen, is de tijd nu of een willekeurige tijd en de situatie is hypothetisch.

Voorbeelden

If the weather wasn't so bad, we would go to the park. (Maar het weer is slecht, dus we kunnen niet gaan.)
If I was the Queen of England, I would give everyone a chicken. (Maar ik ben de koningin niet.)
If you really loved me, you would buy me a diamond ring.
If I knew where she lived, I would go and see her.

Het is juist en heel gebruikelijk om "if I were" te zeggen in plaats van "if I was" (aanvoegende wijs).

Voorbeelden

If I were taller, I would buy this dress.
If I were 20, I would travel the world.
If I were you, I would give up smoking.
If I were a plant, I would love the rain.

In type 2 voorwaardelijke zinnen kun je ook modale hulpwoorden gebruiken in de hoofdzin in plaats van "would" om de graad van zekerheid, toestemming of aanbeveling over het resultaat uit te drukken.

We might buy a larger house if we had more money
He could go to the concert if you gave him your ticket.
If he called me, I couldn't hear.

De present conditional tense

De present conditional van elk werkwoord bestaat uit twee elementen:
would + de infinitief of het hoofdwerkwoord zonder "to"
